Project 2

Image
Stained Glass, 8 inch x 3 inch x 3 inch This piece was created with the inspiration being that of an obelisk. Obelisks are usually pyramidal shape on top of a stone pillar, functioning as a monument or landmark. This semester a lot of my work has focused on the cyclical nature of life, and death. I wanted to reimagine the idea of an obelisk, from it being  cold and solid of stone to being an object that is hollow with light able to pass through. Ideally it will have light coming through within, and shining through the glass to the outside world.

Project 1

Stained Glass, 3 Feet x 3 Feet x 10 inches This piece is inspired by the brutalist movement. I wanted to take the harsh nature of brutalism and make something that was delicate and soft in structure, a direct juxtaposition of what one would think of brutalism to be. This piece is made using stained glass, wire, copper tape, and solder. Wire wraps around the stained glass both to assist in keeping the structure and to instill movement in the piece. The spiral shape is hung on two square shaped portals, making the piece look as if it is jumping through them. The work itself is hung by wire on the ceiling.

Modeling/Mold Making

Plaster, 4 x 2 inches x 2 inches This piece is inspired by cubism, and brutalist architecture. Moving forward I would like to create a lot more of these pieces, especially using the tennis ball mold. This piece was created with plaster, in plastic molds.

Foam and Plaster

Image
Plaster on Foam Board, 18 inches x 12 inches x 12 inches This piece is inspired by the ziggurat, an ancient Mesopotamian tower that functioned as a temple. It consisted of a pyramidal like structure built in stages of terraces. A ziggurat symbolized a link between human kind and the gods. By turning the traditional ziggurat shape on itself, it serves to pose a commentary on the evolution of culture, and our disconnect from spiritualism in the modern age. This piece was created with foam board, and plaster.

Wood Sculpture

Image
Diamond Sculpture, 8 feet Split, Wood This piece is inspired by the collaborative nature of the honeycomb structure, and the reliance on each comb on each other to exist as a collective. Originally inspired by the Vessel, an architectural icon of New York City. My original design was to be in a cylindrical sphere much like the Vessel, but obstacles using salvaged wood proved it to be a challenge, so a pivot in the design was implemented. Sticking with the original design concept of using the diamond shape, a new sculpture emerged from the sawdust. The piece was created with nails, wood glue, and wood filler created by sawdust, glue, and saliva. A piece of 8 foot wood was cut in a total of 18 pieces, each piece being 5.33 inches approximately. 12 pieces were then cut at one end at a 45 degree angle, and the other with two 45 degree angles reaching a point. 6 pieces were cut with two 45 degree angles on each end, with both sides reaching a point. My mockup design was lost somewhere...
