Wood Sculpture
Diamond Sculpture, 8 feet Split, Wood
This piece is inspired by the collaborative nature of the honeycomb structure, and the reliance on each comb on each other to exist as a collective. Originally inspired by the Vessel, an architectural icon of New York City. My original design was to be in a cylindrical sphere much like the Vessel, but obstacles using salvaged wood proved it to be a challenge, so a pivot in the design was implemented. Sticking with the original design concept of using the diamond shape, a new sculpture emerged from the sawdust. The piece was created with nails, wood glue, and wood filler created by sawdust, glue, and saliva. A piece of 8 foot wood was cut in a total of 18 pieces, each piece being 5.33 inches approximately. 12 pieces were then cut at one end at a 45 degree angle, and the other with two 45 degree angles reaching a point. 6 pieces were cut with two 45 degree angles on each end, with both sides reaching a point. My mockup design was lost somewhere on the work table before I had a chance to photograph.
